Mesa's Albert Gamez earns top CCCAA award

Albert Gamez gets CCCAA's Highest Honor

April 1, 2015 - The California Community College Athletic Association honored Mesa alum, Albert Gamez, today with the highest award that they bestow upon a student-athlete.  Gamez was selected as the 2015 CCCAA Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. 

The Scholar Athlete Award is awarded annually by the CCCAA with one going to a male student-athlete the other going to a female student-athlete who both are selected by a committee from nominations made by the student-athletes respective colleges.  The duo is selected based on the following criteria: must carry a minimum 3.5 GPA, demonstrate outstanding leadership as an athlete, student and in the community.  They must also have competed in two seasons of a sport at a California community college.

As an Olympian, Gamez was stand out for the Men's Cross Country and Men's Track and Field teams for two full seasons at both sports.  He was equally successful in the classroom earning a 3.962 GPA overall during his time at Mesa.  In Cross Country, Albert finished in 2nd place at the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) Finals both of his years and finished his sophomore year with a 3rd place finish at the State Finals with a time of 20:17.  As a track athlete, he won a total of four PCAC titles and placed 4th at the SoCal Finals with a 4th place finish in the 1500m at the State Finals in 2014.
