Eagles' Serrato, Knights' McKinnon share Women's honor

The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has selected Mt. San Jacinto College soccer player Ariana Serrato and San Diego City College volleyball player Brielle McKinnon as its Women's Athletes of the Week for Oct. 16-22.

Serrato, a freshman midfielder out of Lakeside High School in Elsinore, scored eight goals as the Eagles outscored two opponents 16-0 in a pair of victories.

Serrato scored seven goals to lead Mt. San Jac to an 11-0 rout of Cuyamaca. She came back later in the week with a goal and an assist as the Eagles defeated Imperial Valley 5-0 in a game that was cancelled after 70 minutes due to high winds.

McKinnon, a sophomore outside hitter/opposite from Highland High School in Gilbert, Arizona, helped lead the PCAC South Division-leading Knights, who are 17-1 on the season, to two more victories, including a 25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23 upset victory over Grossmont. The Knights' second win of the week came over Southwestern 25-13, 23-25, 25-19, 25-12.

In the two victories, McKinnon contributed 16 kills with only three errors and also had four service aces. McKinnon is one of San Diego City's captains and her regular role is as a key defensive player. She also stands out in the classroom with a 4.0 grade-point average.

HONORABLE MENTION

Lillian Hill (San Diego Mesa Soccer), a freshman out of Carlsbad High School and the Olympians' goalkeeper. Hill had two big shutouts for the Olympians last week in two quality cross-division wins over PCAC North teams San Diego Miramar 2-0 and MiraCosta 4-0. She had a point-blank save in the first five minutes of the game that got the Olympians off and running against the Jets. She came back against the Spartans two nights later and made five saves to preserve the win. Hill has nine shutouts for the season.

Mitzy Ortega (Southwestern Soccer), a freshman forward from Sweetwater High School, scored the Jaguars' goal as the PCAC South Division leaders remained unbeaten on the season at 13-0-3 with a 1-1 cross-over tie against North Division leader San Bernardino Valley, the nation's No. 6-ranked team which is 13-1-1 on the season. Ortega's goal was her 14th of the year.

Lichi Liu (College of the Desert Golf), the Roadrunners' star female athlete who has medaled in every PCAC conference match this season. The sophomore from Palm Desert High School, tied COD teammate Zoe Walker for medalist honors in the conference match last Wednesday at Menifee Lakes, coming off a 73 the previous week at San Clemente.

Jenna Heatherly, MiraCosta Soccer), a sophomore midfielder from Tri-City Christian High School, who scored two goals in the Spartans' 2-1 cross-division upset win over Grossmont.
